On the weekend Mum and I went to the Grand Designs Live home show. That's where I discovered just how captivated Mum is by Kevin McCloud. I'll admit, I can see the appeal - I've heard him described as the thinking woman's crush - but Mum is a touch besotted.
We stood for 35 minutes waiting for his presentation to begin.
Mum checked her phone many, many times, hoping beyond hope to receive the call telling her we were one of the 5 couples selected for a Kevin McCloud VIP experience that afternoon. We weren't.
When we came across the book-signing area Mum rushed to join the queue but, to her disappointment, was told she was too late. So we just watched. Then Mum told me to get my camera out, just in case. Just in case of what? I asked.
That's when Mum's sign came out.
'Three weeks ago I went to Frome looking for Kevin. Now has Kevin come to Melbourne looking for me?'
She just stood there, quietly waiting, and within a few minutes he'd noticed.
He obviously got a kick out of it and asked Mum a few questions. It's true by the way - she had just been to his home town!
Mum may not have been able to have her photo taken with Kevin McCloud, but I think this was even better. :)
Boyf and I are talking about buying a house together, in the not-too-crazy-distant future. The finer details - budget, building or buying, location - aren't yet sorted but, with the topic in my mind after visiting Grand Designs Live, I decided to have a look at properties online while at work on Monday.
And I fell in love.
The ornate cornices, the wood detailing, the original doors... Love.
When I told my sister I'd fallen in love and was sad because I couldn't buy it, she reminded me to keep perspective. #firstworldproblems.
When I told my Mum I'd fallen in love and now wanted a place we'd renovate, she told me to buy a warehouse closer to the city to convert.
When I told my Dad I'd fallen in love and shouldn't look at any more properties, he agreed, unless I could separate out the emotion of looking. But that's half the fun, he said.
When I told Boyf I'd fallen in love and wanted to buy this house, he told me it looked good but there were plenty in the area like that and we'd find another.
Later that night we were discussing the renovations we'd make to the house. He suggested we turn the lounge room into a master bedroom and put a wall right through the dining room, converting it into an ensuite. You mean those rooms with the original detailing that I adored?
Note to self - don't leave Boyf alone with house plans.
