Given that my sister has borrowed my camera to take on holiday (I am an incredibly kind, generous and trusting sister who is expecting a kick-ass souvenir!) I decided to experiment with the Hipstamatic app for this month's 12 on the 12th.
I can admit it - one of the main reasons I gave in and bought an iPhone last week was so I could get the Instagram and Hipstamatic apps. :)
It was quite a change having to wait for the photos to 'develop'. I think I took about a third of the photos I normally would on the 12th and found it difficult not having that immediate feedback of checking the screen. I also crop almost every photo I take so having to work with the in-camera composition, particularly when the viewfinder doesn't entirely correspond to the finished photo, felt very unusual. I don't think I would have the same enjoyment of photography if it was still film and analogue.

Given that I spent the 12th of July either at an airport, traveling to an airport or on a plane, I think I should be forgiven for missing a month. But what's the fun in that? :)
Actually, taking these photos provided some good distraction during my 7 hours (!) in Singapore airport. And really, how many airports come complete with Sunflower and Butterfly Gardens?
Hope you enjoy.

(I keep wanting to type that it's April's 12 on the 12th. Oih - I think I am a few months behind!)
This month, for the first time since I started these 12ths, I didn't feel like taking photos. Despite it being a Sunday and having every opportunity to pick up the camera and play, I didn't really want to. (I think I have a touch of preformance anxiety.)
Finally a little motivation struck at about 6:30pm, just as I headed out to dinner with friends. They very kindly put up with me as I snapped away before, during and after our meals. (Thanks guys!)
The photos this month are pretty average (reflecting the effort I put in) but, it is all practice. Noticing, composing, capturing, editing - all skills that I'm hoping to improve.
This photo did appear in my last post (still adoring my album!) but I am really liking that perspective of looking down. I want to take more of these photos, capturing what's on my desk.
Every month I want to include some sort of self-portrait (very loosely defined).
I like the lines of this one.
I played with the editing of this one - love those bright colours. When I'm traveling I hope I remember to capture the little details like this.
The second category of photo I want to include every month - something reminiscent of the season. An autumn leaf.
And there you have it - another 12 on the 12th that isn't my favourite, but it'll do. :)

This evening I printed, trimmed and glued the photos from this post to create this layout.
A little bit of patterned paper, some letter stickers and I was done. Quick, easy and fun. :)

This 12th was not a convenient day for me to take photos. It rained - all day - and my regular Thursday night dinner at Mum and Dad's wasn't to be as casual as normal because they had houseguests. But, I think this is all part of the challenge - working with the time, lighting and opportunities that are available. And anyway, houseguests Kim and Dale come with baby Oliver who loves to pose for the camera. :)

Tonight I printed out the twelve photos I took on April 12 and created a layout. Working with 10 landscape and 2 portrait photos on one page created a bit of a challenge - not sure what I think of that white behind the title - but overall I'm pleased with how it turned out. :)

In the past I have documented my day, even week, in photos. I love these projects and plan to do them again. However, that's not what I'm after with 12 on the 12th. I'm not trying to represent my day in photos. Instead I'm playing and experimenting with my camera, trying to think creatively and pay attention to the details around me. Hopeful that will result in 12 interesting photos.
My friend Rebecca (of the self-portraits) is playing along. Because she lives on the other side of the world, we agreed to each include a photo that represents the weather/season and, of course, some sort of self-portrait. Those are our only restrictions.
Hope you enjoy my first 12 on the 12th.
