Today was a public holiday here in Melbourne, for the Melbourne Cup - 'the race that stops a nation'. What better day to tick off this item on my 30 before 30 list:
21. Spend a day at the races.
We didn't go THE Melbourne Cup - a massive big event which had over 106,000 attendees. Instead, with Nicole, Paul and friends, I headed to the much more laid back and relaxed Yarra Glen Races. Dressed up with hats and fascinators, we picnicked on the (progressively muddier) lawn. There may have been a glass or two of sparkling wine involved as well. :)
One of our favourite things to do there is critique the outfits of people as they pass by. Although there were lots of outfits we did like (and I'm now inspired to go shoe shopping this week) bad dresses are much more amusing. :)
I also had fun playing with my camera and phone.
I don't think it's a true racecourse without roses. :)
I bet on two of the day's harness races, with dismal results, but couldn't resist placing one last bet on the big one of the day - the Melbourne Cup.
$5 for the win on number 3, Dunaden.
As 3pm came we all stood up at the fence, peering through the umbrellas at the big screen. With the race 5 minutes late to start, the anticipation built. Finally they were off and racing. Listening to the race call, catching the occassional mention of Dunaden, before the cheers are almost too loud to hear anything. I think Dunaden is near the front but it's confusion more than anything. Then it's onto the straight and two horses are crossing the finishing line, neck and neck. A photo-finish, the closest in the race's history the caller announcers.
Conversation bubbles - Which is it? Who won? Too close. Dunaden I think. It's Dunaden or Red something. One of them won.
We wait for the winner to be announced...it's Dunaden!
Without collaboration, Nicole, Jas and I had all bet on Dunaden. Winners!
$35 back, $20 up for the day. The perfect way to end a day at the races. :)
